Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Open Source Technical Writer to join our Open Source Program Office (OSPO) team. The ideal candidate will have experience in contributing to and maintaining technical documentation in open source communities. This role requires a candidate who is passionate about open source projects and has the ability to communicate complex technical information in a clear and concise manner.

Responsibilities:

  • Technical Documentation: Create and maintain a variety of technical documents, including user manuals, design specifications, and online help within open source communities
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with development, QA, and our open source communities to gather information and ensure the accuracy and completeness of documentation.
  • Structured Approach: Develop and standardize documentation templates and ensure consistent documentation standards across projects.
  • Community: Participate in and contribute to open source community discussions and documentation efforts.
  • Research: Research, analyze, and organize complex technical information into user-friendly documents.
  • Outreach: Work with our open source communities on community marketing content such as blogs, how-to articles, and other educational materials.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in technical writing, preferably in a software or technology-intensive field.
  • Proven experience in contributing to open source projects.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with a keen eye for detail.
  • Ability to understand and explain complex technical concepts clearly.
  • Proficiency with documentation tools such as Markdown, Git, and content management systems (CMS).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Passion to thrive in a fast-paced, fluid environment.
     

Highly Desirable:

  • Experience with API documentation and familiarity with RESTful APIs.
  • Familiarity with software development processes and agile methodologies.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native concepts, Kubernetes, and open source infrastructure.
  • Experience with creating diagrams, illustrations, and other visual aids to enhance documentation.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
