Job Description

Janes enables militaries, governments, and defence companies to make critical decisions. Our expert-driven tradecraft, developed over 120 years, combined with human-machine teaming, delivers assured open-source intelligence across military capabilities and order of battle, equipment, events, countries, companies, and markets.

Linking millions of assured data points, Janes data model creates a framework of interconnected open source defence intelligence. This allows our customers to integrate all relevant data and connections into a single intelligence environment to deliver a more complete and accurate answer. Using Janes, our customers can use their scarce resource more effectively, to get to better decisions with higher confidence, more quickly.

Job Purpose

Janes is looking for an individual who either has knowledge and understanding of defence and security domains and a strong interest in knowledge management, organisations and exploitation, or an individual with a background in taxonomy or ontology development, data modelling, or information architecture with a passion for defence and security to join our growing Content Architecture team.

How you will contribute at Janes

In this exciting but challenging role you will be at the forefront of developing the Janes Data Model and the wider Janes Content Architecture. This will initially include helping to establish how Janes defines the structure and interactions within defence programmes, the relationships between military operations, ORBATs, deployments and units, the integration of PMESII country reports and related data into the model, and the development of taxonomies and classification systems to support all these areas.

In addition to these core areas of focus you will also be a key part of Janes Content and Data Governance group where you will help ensure that we have clear definitions, standards and processes being applied across all content generation areas and functions. This will extend to the design and ongoing development of content generation rules that will help to ensure that we have referential integrity across the Janes content sets and embed automated quality processes in our core workflows.

Due to the collaborative nature of the role, you will be interacting with other members of the team and the wider SME team in the development of these models and classification systems on a regular basis. As such you will need to able to lead groups in feedback and brainstorming sessions as part of the concept development process while also having the courage and confidence to disagree with what is being suggested in a constructive fashion.

Due to the nature of the role and the tasks being undertaken you will be working in a very collaborative team where you will be expected to provide constructive feedback and criticism to colleagues at all levels, as well as supporting colleague training and cultural change around data processes, standards and governance.

Requirements

  • A degree in Computer Science, Library Science, Information Systems, Linguistics or equivalent professional experience and a strong interest in defence and security.
  • Experience in taxonomy, ontology or data modelling with knowledge of 4D models would be an advantage. OR a background in the military, defence or security domains (either through service or education) who understands content modelling, taxonomy development, or similar areas.
  • A knowledge of military standards/methodologies such as 2525/APP-6, the OSINT cycle, PMESII-PT and similar would be an advantage.

The ideal values-based skills and experience for the role are:

  • Strong interpersonal communication, relationship-building, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrable ability to explain complex concepts and principles in a way that is easy to understand and relate to.
  • The ability to look at specific data sets and examples and create a globally relevant abstract model.
  • The courage and ability to constructively disagree with those more senior or experienced based on solid foundational principles and propose change or improvement to established concepts, processes and assumptions.
